Daiquiri, Wednesday June 22nd, 4.30 P. M. Spanish-American War, June 1898
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a pivotal moment in history during the Spanish-American War in June of 1898. Taken by American actor and journalist William Burr McIntosh, this image showcases the landing of approximately 16,000 American troops under the command of US Navy Admiral William T. Sampson and US Army General William Rufus Shafter at the small village of Daiquiri near Santiago de Cuba. Intriguingly composed against a backdrop of rolling hills and a picturesque coastal landscape, this photograph encapsulates both the beauty and intensity of war. The scene depicts Admiral Sampson's forces firing upon Daiquiri, effectively dispersing the meager Spanish troops present there. The significance of this event is further emphasized by Cuban General Calixto Garcia's strategic move to cut off Spanish communications and supply lines at Cabanas. McIntosh's lens expertly captures not only the physicality but also the geographical importance that played a role in shaping this conflict. Taken from his book "The Little I saw of Cuba" which documented his experiences as both reporter and photographer during this historic period, McIntosh provides us with an invaluable visual record that transports us back to those tumultuous times. As we gaze upon this remarkable image over a century later, it serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those involved in shaping our world today through their actions on battlefields like Daiquiri.
