MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) Vehicles at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan
M270 MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) vehicles at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan.
The 227mm American designed Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) is a self-propelled artillery rocket system with a range in excess of 30 km. MLRS is self-loaded with two rocket pods, each containing six rockets. Loading is power assisted and a single round fire for effect of 12 rockets delivers 7, 728 bomblets or 336 anti-tank mines. Operated from hides, usually as a battery of nine launchers, MLRS avoids counter attack by shooting and scooting - moving fast and frequently between fire-missions

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the powerful presence of MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) vehicles at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan. These American-designed artillery rocket systems are a force to be reckoned with, boasting an impressive range of over 30 km. The MLRS is equipped with two rocket pods, each containing six rockets that can be power-assisted for quick loading. One remarkable feature of the MLRS is its ability to deliver devastating firepower in a single round fire for effect. With 12 rockets launched simultaneously, it unleashes a staggering payload of 7,728 bomblets or 336 anti-tank mines onto the battlefield. This makes it an invaluable asset during military operations and campaigns. To ensure their safety from counterattacks, these formidable weapons are operated from hidden positions known as hides. Typically deployed in batteries consisting of nine launchers, they employ a shoot-and-scoot tactic - rapidly moving between fire missions to avoid detection and retaliation. Cpl Ian Houlding's photograph showcases the sheer might and technological prowess embodied by these MLRS vehicles. It serves as a testament to the dedication and skill of our armed forces who utilize this advanced weaponry in their mission to protect and defend.
