Fishery Protection Vessel HMS Mersey
River Class Patrol Vessel HMS Mersey of the Fishery Protection Squadron is pictured at sea near Portsmouth.
HMS Mersey is the youngest of the original batch of River- class patrol vessels built for the Fishery Protection Squadron the oldest unit in the Royal Navy. She patrols the waters of the UK and up to 200 miles in the Atlantic ensuring that fishing boats and trawlers stick to internationally-agreed quotas.
Mersey was the last ship to be built at Vosper Thornycroft yard in Woolston, Southampton.
Mersey like her sister ships is not owned by the RN, she is in fact leased by BAE who retain the responsibility for any major maintenance and upkeep.
The ship is a regular visitor to UK ports and often hosts organised groups to show what the Royal Navy is about. She operates a crew rotation system which means that a member of the ships company would normally spend four weeks onboard and two weeks ashore catching up on leave or on courses, allowing the ship herself to be on almost constant patrol

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Fishery Protection Vessel HMS Mersey, a River Class Patrol Vessel, is captured in this stunning print as it sails through the waters near Portsmouth. As the youngest of its kind, HMS Mersey plays a vital role in enforcing fishing regulations and ensuring that boats adhere to internationally-agreed quotas within UK waters and up to 200 miles into the Atlantic. Built specifically for the Fishery Protection Squadron, which is the oldest unit in the Royal Navy, HMS Mersey represents a commitment to preserving marine resources and maintaining sustainable fishing practices. Interestingly, she was also the final ship constructed at Vosper Thornycroft yard in Woolston, Southampton. Although not owned by the Royal Navy itself, HMS Mersey is leased by BAE Systems who assume responsibility for major maintenance and upkeep. This arrangement allows her crew members to focus on their primary duty of patrolling and safeguarding our seas. In addition to her operational duties, HMS Mersey frequently visits various ports across the UK. She often welcomes organized groups aboard to provide an insight into life at sea with the Royal Navy. The vessel operates on a rotation system whereby crew members spend four weeks onboard followed by two weeks ashore for leave or training courses. This ensures that HMS Mersey can remain almost constantly on patrol. This image serves as a reminder of both our naval capabilities and our dedication towards protecting our precious marine ecosystems.
