EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning sleeved waistcoat from the early 18th century. Crafted with exquisite detail, this garment is a true testament to the artistry of English fashion during this period. Made from fawn silk brocade, the waistcoat features an intricate woven "bizarre" design in brown, pale blue, and silver thread. The length of the waistcoat measures an impressive 105 cm, adding to its grandeur. The front of the waistcoat flares at the sides below the waist and fastens from neck to hem with 43 small silver thread buttons and buttonholes stitched with silver thread. Interestingly, the ten lowest buttonholes have not been cut, adding an element of mystery to this piece. The sleeves are long and divided into two sections, fastening from wrist to elbow with six buttons each. The lining is made of fawn silk with a figured stripe pattern while being interlined with brown linen for added structure. A unique feature of this particular garment is a piece of linen inscribed in ink that reads "Fassett, Kingston on Thames" which has been stitched onto the back lining. Displayed at Manchester Art Gallery in the UK, this sleeved waistcoat represents both elegance and craftsmanship that were highly valued during its time. It serves as a reminder of how fashion can be both functional and artistic throughout history.
