EDITORS COMMENTS
Ernest Baumgartner, 1570: A Glimpse into the Fashion of Nobility". This print transports us back to the year 1570, offering a rare glimpse into the fashion and elegance of Ernest Baumgartner, a distinguished patrician from Nuremberg. The image is based on an oil painting by Recape and beautifully brought to life through hand coloring by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard. In this depiction, Baumgartner stands proudly in attire befitting gentlemen in the courts of Charles IX and Henri III. His ensemble exudes opulence and refinement, showcasing intricate details that were characteristic of high society during this period. The lithography process employed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie further enhances the richness of colors and textures present in this remarkable artwork. Every brushstroke seems to come alive as if frozen in time. Originally published as part of Georges Duplessis' renowned work "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" this image serves as a continuation of Bonnard and Mercuri's earlier series on costumes from previous centuries. Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard's talent shines through his meticulous attention to detail in both book illustration and interior design for public buildings and churches. As a professor at the National School of Decorative Arts, he left an indelible mark on French art history.
