Detail of frescoes, 1357-64 (fresco)
6262838 Detail of frescoes, 1357-64 (fresco) by Ugolino di Prete, Ilario (1330-c.1404) & others; Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta), Orvieto, Umbria, Italy; (add.info.: The interior, the Chapel of the Corporale
Consistently with the destination of the Chapel, the iconographic program of the cycle has as its object not only the episodes of the Bolsena Mass, but in general the mystery of Transubstantiation. In fact, in addition to the miracle of Bolsena, several other prodigies are depicted - mostly they are episodes taken from exempla developed with a didactic purpose - which would demonstrate the real presence of the body of Christ in the consecrated Particola. Complete the decoration scenes of the Passion of Christ and in particular the representation of the Last Supper, precisely the institution of the Eucharist.

Created by Ugolino di Prete, Ilario and other artists, these stunning frescoes adorn the interior of the Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta) in Orvieto, Umbria, Italy. The focal point of this particular image is the Chapel of the Corporale within the cathedral. The iconographic program of this cycle aims to depict not only the episodes of the Bolsena Mass but also delves into the mystery of Transubstantiation. Alongside portraying the miracle at Bolsena, numerous other prodigies are illustrated—mostly derived from didactic exempla—to emphasize and demonstrate Christ's real presence in consecrated bread. In addition to these miraculous scenes, depictions related to Christ's Passion can be found throughout this remarkable artwork.
