King picking flower buds (Victorian cartoon)

A mad King picking all the flower buds off his plants. Naturally, once the buds had gone, there would be no flowers, so the other plants in the garden were angry and grew so much that they blocked up his doorway and he couldn t go out! And the flowers grew contentedly, once left alone. From Merry Conceits and Whimsical Rhymes, written and drawn by Charles H. Ross. Engraved and printed by Edmund Evans. Published by George Routledge & Sons, London & New York, 1883. Each somewhat anarchistic illustration comes with a humorous verse, often highly unpolitically-correct by todays standards

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this whimsical Victorian cartoon, we are transported to a time when even the most powerful figures could not escape the consequences of their actions. The print depicts a mad King, consumed by his own desires, as he ruthlessly plucks all the flower buds from his plants. Unbeknownst to him, these innocent acts of destruction would have far-reaching effects. As expected, the other plants in the garden become furious at their loss and grow uncontrollably in protest. Their collective anger manifests into an impenetrable wall that blocks the King's doorway, trapping him inside his own domain. Meanwhile, left undisturbed by human interference, the flowers themselves find contentment and flourish once again. This illustration is part of Charles H. Ross' Merry Conceits and Whimsical Rhymes collection published in 1883. Each artwork within this series showcases anarchistic themes accompanied by humorous verses that challenge societal norms of that era. Through its clever portrayal of cause and effect, this image serves as a reminder that our actions can have unintended consequences on both ourselves and those around us. It also highlights how nature has its way of restoring balance when left undisturbed. This piece captures a moment frozen in time - an amusing yet thought-provoking commentary on human folly and nature's resilience.
