EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Empress Masako Ichijo, a prominent figure in Japanese history during the late 19th century. The steel engraving beautifully captures her grace and elegance, reflecting the essence of her role as the woman of Mutsuhito Mikado Japan. Empress Masako Ichijo was married to Emperor Mutsuhito, also known as Emperor Meiji, who reigned from 1868 to 1912. As an influential member of the imperial family, she played a significant role in shaping Japan's modernization efforts during this transformative period. Born Haruko Ichijo on January 11,1869, she later became Her Imperial Japanese Majesty after marrying Emperor Mutsuhito. Known for her intelligence and diplomacy, Empress Masako contributed greatly to diplomatic relations with other nations and supported various social causes within Japan. Tragically, her life was cut short at the age of 43 when she passed away on July 30,1912. Despite her untimely death, Empress Masako left behind a lasting legacy that continues to inspire generations today. This image created in the late-18th century through steel engraving by Grafissimo is a testament to Empress Masako's enduring presence and significance in Japanese history. It serves as a reminder of her contributions towards shaping Japan into the nation it is today – one that seamlessly blends tradition with progressiveness.
