Char minar in Bukhara

Photogenic little Char Minar bears more relation to Indian styles than to anything Bukharan. This was the gatehouse of a long-gone medressa built in 1807. The name means Four Minarets in Tajik, although they aren t strictly minarets but simply decorative towers. Unesco restored one collapsed tower and fixed another in 1998

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the charm of Char Minar in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. Standing tall against a clear blue sky, this photogenic little structure bears more resemblance to Indian architectural styles than to anything traditionally Bukharan. Originally serving as the gatehouse for a medressa that existed centuries ago, this historical gem was built in 1807. The name "Char Minar" translates to Four Minarets in Tajik, although these towers are not strictly minarets but rather decorative elements. Over time, two of the towers had fallen into disrepair until UNESCO stepped in and restored one collapsed tower while fixing another in 1998. In this image captured by Frans Sellies, we witness the beauty of Char Minar set against its surroundings. The absence of people allows us to appreciate its grandeur and imagine how it must have been during its heyday. Bathed in sunlight and casting shadows on the ground below, every intricate detail is highlighted – from the ornate architecture to the delicate branches reaching towards it. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are transported back in time and reminded of Bukhara's rich history. It serves as a reminder that even though things may change over time, there will always be remnants of our past that continue to captivate us with their timeless beauty.
