This woodblock print, created by the renowned artist Shunsho, showcases Ichimura Uzaemon IX in an extraordinary role as a male fox disguised as the sake seller Iseya, performing in the dance sequence "Myoto-zake Kawaranu Nakanaka" from the second part of the Kabuki play "Chigo Torii Kitsune" (Heavenly Child - The Fox Leaps Through the Shrine Gate), staged at the Ichimura Theater in the eleventh month of 1777. The print is a stunning example of the Katsukawa School's artistic mastery during the Edo period. Uzaemon, dressed in the intricately designed and vibrant garments of the sake seller, is depicted on the left side of the print. His fox spirit identity, Kitsune Gaō, is suggested by the subtle yet distinct fox ears and tail peeking out from under his kimono.
