The altar of the new church of St. Giles. Camberwell - ceremony of consecration, 1844

The altar of the new church of St. Giles. Camberwell - ceremony of consecration, 1844. Solemn dedication of a newly built church in south London. This magnificent structure...was consecrated by the Lord Bishop of Winchester [Charles Sumner]...the sermon (a very excellent discourse) from the 12th chapter of Deuteronomy, v. 5, was preached by his Lordship the Bishop. The church...is built of Whitby stone and stone from Caen, in Normandy, in the style of the time of Edward II. when the decorative manner began to be ingrafted on the plainer English Gothic of the earlier ages. The architects are Messrs. Scott and Moffatt, of whom it would be unjust not to say that they have rescued modern church building from the reproach of want of taste and architectural authority, which some recent edifices had brought upon it. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion in the history of St. Giles Church in Camberwell, London. The year is 1844, and the ceremony of consecration is taking place, led by the esteemed Lord Bishop of Winchester, Charles Sumner. The newly built church stands as a magnificent structure, its grandeur evident in every detail. Constructed with Whitby stone and stone from Caen in Normandy, it showcases the architectural style of Edward II's era when decorative elements were added to English Gothic designs. The architects behind this masterpiece are none other than Messrs. Scott and Moffatt, who have breathed new life into modern church building with their impeccable taste and architectural authority. Their work has redeemed the reputation tarnished by some recent edifices lacking such qualities. As the bishop delivers his sermon on Deuteronomy 12:5, his words resonate within these hallowed walls. The atmosphere is filled with reverence as clergy members stand alongside parishioners witnessing this solemn dedication. This engraving from "Illustrated London News" transports us back to a time when religion played an integral role in society. It reminds us of our rich heritage and serves as a testament to human craftsmanship and devotion. Through this image captured by an unknown artist, we glimpse into history—a snapshot frozen in time that immortalizes not just a physical structure but also the spiritual significance it holds for generations past and those yet to come.
