Caricature of Napoleon, c1814, (1921). Creator: Unknown

Caricature of Napoleon, c1814, (1921). This hieroglyphic portrait of the Destroyer is faithfully copied from a German Print, with the Parody of his assumed Titles. The hat of the destroyer represents a discomfited French Eagle, maimed and crouching, after his conflict with the eagles of the North. His Visage is composed of the carcasses of the victims of his folly and ambition, who perished on the Plains of Russia and Saxony. His Throat is encircled with the Red Sea, in allusion to his drowned hosts. His epaulette is a hand, leading the Rhenish confederation, under the flimsy symbol of the Cobweb. The spider is an emblem of the vigilance of the Allies, who have inflicted on that hand a deadly sting! After Johann Michael Voltz. From " Napoleon", by Raymond Guyot, [H. Floury, Paris, 1921]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing caricature of Napoleon, created in 1814 but reproduced in 1921 by an unknown artist. The image portrays the infamous French leader as the "Destroyer" with each element symbolically representing his tumultuous reign and ultimate downfall. The centerpiece of this hieroglyphic portrait is Napoleon's hat, which takes on the form of a disheartened French Eagle, wounded and cowering after its encounters with the eagles of the North. The visage of the Destroyer itself is composed entirely of carcasses, representing those who fell victim to his folly and ambition on the battlefields of Russia and Saxony. A striking detail lies around Napoleon's throat - it is encircled by the Red Sea, alluding to his drowned armies. His epaulette takes shape as a hand leading the Rhenish confederation under a fragile cobweb symbol. This spider serves as an emblem for the vigilance displayed by Allies who have inflicted upon that hand a deadly sting. The original artwork was crafted by Johann Michael Voltz but was faithfully copied for Raymond Guyot's book "Napoleon" published in Paris in 1921. Through this powerful caricature, we are reminded not only of Napoleon's historical significance but also how art can capture complex narratives through symbolic imagery.
