EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Charles George Gordon, an esteemed English soldier and administrator from the late 19th century. Known by various names such as Chinese Gordon, Gordon Pasha, and Gordon of Khartoum, he left a lasting impact on British military history. With a distinguished career in the British Army, he actively participated in the Crimean War and played a crucial role in suppressing the Taiping Rebellion during the early 1860s. In this monochrome portrait captured between 1894-1907, General Gordon exudes strength and determination. His face bears witness to his experiences on the battlefield while his leaning posture against his elbow reflects both confidence and contemplation. The presence of his well-groomed mustache adds an air of sophistication to his overall appearance. Tragically, General Gordon met his untimely demise at Khartoum on January 26th, 1885 when overwhelmed by forces led by Mahdi. Despite this unfortunate end to his life, Charles George Gordon's legacy lives on as one of Britain's most revered soldiers. Preserved through time with meticulous care by Ogdens Guinea Gold Cigarettes (not affiliated with any commercial use), this black-and-white print allows us to glimpse into the past and appreciate the dedication and sacrifice exhibited by individuals like General Gordon who served their country with unwavering loyalty.
