EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite print depicts the Christmas Rose, or Helleborus Niger, a rare and enchanting winter flower. The image was created between 1596 and 1610 by the renowned Flemish botanist and artist Anselmus de Boodt, in collaboration with Elias Verhulst. Commissioned by Emperor Rudolf II, this masterpiece is a testament to the advanced natural history knowledge and artistic skill of the time. Anselmus de Boodt, a native of Delft in the Netherlands, was a prominent figure in the Low Countries during the 16th and 17th centuries. He was not only a botanist but also an accomplished artist, and his meticulous illustrations of plants were highly sought after by collectors and scholars. Elias Verhulst, a fellow Flemish artist, contributed his expertise in lettering and ink work to this stunning creation. The result is a beautifully detailed and colorful depiction of the Christmas Rose, with its distinctive black petals and green centers. The Christmas Rose, also known as the Black Hellebore, was a popular subject for botanical illustrations during this period due to its rarity and the belief that it bloomed during the Christmas season. This print is an invaluable addition to any natural history or botanical collection, as well as a fascinating glimpse into the scientific and artistic achievements of the early modern era. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, one of Europe's oldest and most prestigious art and history museums, is home to this remarkable piece. It is a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of the Netherlands and the important role that natural history and botany played in the artistic and scientific developments of the time.
