EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic "Drakes Drum" an illustration taken from Henry Newbolt's renowned book, "Drakes Drum and Other Songs of the Sea" published in 1905. The color lithograph beautifully captures the essence of this historical artifact that holds great significance in English folklore. The drum itself is a snare drum that accompanied Sir Francis Drake, a legendary Devon man who ruled the seas during his time. As he embarked on his famous circumnavigation of the world, he carried this cherished instrument with him. Just before his untimely demise off Panama, Drake commanded that the drum be transported to Buckland Abbey. He made a solemn vow that if England ever faced perilous times and someone were to beat upon its surface, he would return from beyond to defend his beloved country. Legend has it that during moments of national crisis, one can hear the resounding beats emanating from Drakes Drum. This mystical belief adds an air of enchantment to this already fascinating piece of history. In Arthur David McCormick's skillful depiction, we see crew members aboard a majestic Elizabethan ship as they sail through treacherous waters. A lookout stands tall on deck while wearing an impressive helmet and uniform typical for naval personnel at that time. Amidst their duties and responsibilities, one brave soul plays Drakes Drum with fervor and determination. This remarkable image not only transports us back in time but also serves as a reminder of our nation's resilience when faced with adversity throughout history.
