EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the exquisite beauty and spiritual significance of Manjushri, a bodhisattva of wisdom in Buddhism. Created by an unknown Chinese artist between 1500-1550, this artwork showcases their interpretation of an Indo-Nepalese throne surrounding the white figure of Manjushri. The focal point is undoubtedly the bodhisattva himself, adorned with Chinese textiles and jewels that drape gracefully over his body. The composition is dominated by a mesmerizing malachite green hue, with a contrasting red lower garment that adds depth to the overall aesthetic. Swirling clouds of variegated colors encircle the periphery, enhancing the mystical and almost magical atmosphere surrounding this iconic figure. Manjushri's posture and expression convey serenity and deep insight gained through yogic meditation practices. His hands are positioned in a gesture symbolizing imparting Buddhist teachings to others. Notably, he carries a book on a lotus near his left shoulder, signifying his association with wisdom. This painting was created during China's Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) using opaque watercolor and gold on cotton. It has been mounted as a hanging scroll at The Cleveland Museum of Art but its creator remains unknown. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has beautifully captured this remarkable piece for us to appreciate its cultural significance and artistic brilliance for generations to come.
