Olympic stadium, Athens, 1906, (1936)

Olympic stadium, Athens, 1906, (1936). As well as the inaugural games of the modern era in 1896, Athens hosted a further games, known as the Intercalated Games, in 1906. Athens had proposed that it could host the Olympics every four years, but Baron Pierre de Coubertin was opposed to the idea, not least because he wanted Paris to host the 1900 edition. As a compromise, it was decided that Athens would host games every four years in between the main Olympic Games. The 1906 version was a success, partly because unlike 1900 and 1904 it was not tied into an International Exposition and was not staged over a period of several months. However, political tensions in the Balkans caused a cancellation in 1910 and World War I ruled out 1914 and 1918, causing the idea to fall out of favour. The home of the Olympics would have to wait until 2004 to stage another games. A print from Olympia 1936, Die Olympischen Spiele 1936, Volume I, Cigaretten-Bilderdienst, Hamburg, 1936

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece, during the Intercalated Games of 1906. Following the inaugural modern Olympics in 1896, Athens proposed to host the games every four years. However, Baron Pierre de Coubertin disagreed with this idea as he had plans for Paris to host the 1900 edition. As a compromise, it was decided that Athens would hold games every four years between the main Olympic Games. The 1906 Intercalated Games were a resounding success, distinguished from previous editions by their independence from International Expositions and shorter duration. Unfortunately, political tensions in the Balkans led to its cancellation in 1910. World War I further disrupted subsequent events scheduled for 1914 and 1918, causing this concept of intercalated games to lose popularity. It took nearly a century before Athens regained its status as an Olympic host city when it successfully staged another games in 2004. This historic photograph serves as a reminder of both Athens' rich Olympic heritage and its long wait for redemption. Preserved within this print is not only an image but also a glimpse into history - Olympia 1936 - Die Olympischen Spiele (Volume I), published by Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Hamburg in 1936. Although we do not know who specifically created this piece of artistry captured on film, its significance lies beyond commercial use or attribution; it symbolizes resilience and perseverance amidst global challenges faced throughout history's most celebrated sporting event.
