EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the grand occasion of the presentation of the address to the Hon. Augustus Henry Venables-Vernon on his 21st birthday at Barlowfold, Cheshire, England, in 1850. The scene is set against the backdrop of a beautiful country estate, with a grand manor house in the distance. The image is a testament to the social hierarchy of the time, with the tenants and dependents of the Vernon family gathered to celebrate the heir's coming of age. The crowd, estimated to be around 2500 strong, includes a diverse range of people from the local community, such as a band of music from Stockport, blacksmiths, millwrights and engineers, agricultural labourers and colliery carters, women, and schoolchildren. The occasion began with salutes of cannon, followed by the arrival of Mr. Vernon, accompanied by his brother and other dignitaries. The crowd greeted him with respect, raising their hats in deference to their lord. Horses and horsemen are also present, adding to the sense of grandeur and pageantry. This engraving, from the Illustrated London News, provides a fascinating glimpse into rural life in 19th century Britain and the traditions surrounding the coming of age of a landowner.
