EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Vancouvers Kitsilano Boys Band in 1935. Led by the talented conductor Arthur W. Delamont, this group of young musicians achieved remarkable success during their time together. The band's achievements are proudly displayed on the caption, highlighting their titles as Canadian Champions in Toronto 1931, Pacific Northwest & B. C. Champions from 1931 to 1934, and First Prize Winners at the Worlds Fair in Chicago in 1933. Founded by Delamont himself in Vancouver back in 1928, the Kitsilano Boys Band quickly gained recognition for their exceptional musical abilities. In fact, they were not only able to compete against adult colliery bands composed of experienced musicians but also emerged victorious against them at London's Crystal Palace during a tour across Ireland, Scotland, and England in 1936. The image showcases a united group portrait of these talented boys with their brass instruments held high. Their dedication to music is evident through each musician's focused expression and poised stance on the steps where they stand. This historic photograph serves as a testament to both individual talent and collective harmony within this extraordinary ensemble. Preserved over time thanks to Shirley Markham's postcard collection, this rare snapshot offers us a glimpse into an era when passion for music knew no age boundaries or limitations. It reminds us that even young individuals can achieve greatness when given opportunities and guidance under visionary leadership like that provided by Arthur W. Delamont.
