The Vendace of Loch Maben, 1862. Creator: Unknown

The Vendace of Loch Maben, 1862....the vendace...so far as we know, is only found in the lochs in the neighbourhood of Loch Maben, in Dumfriessshire. The history of this mysterious fish is, that it was introduced into these lochs by Mary Queen of Scotland from one of the Continental fish-preserves. Some of the people call the vendace a fresh-water herring, and in general appearance there is a wonderful resemblance, so far as the mere figure is concerned...They spawn about the commencement of November, and at that period gather themselves into shoals, and frequently rise to the surface of the water, quite after the manner of the common herring, making at the same time a similar poppling noise by their rise and fall. The vendace is a remarkably tender fish, very productive, and very shy in its habits, requiring to be caught with a net, and when once taken from the water its death is certain, even if immediately restored. This fish is known by naturalists to be so tender that it could not bear transportation even the length of a few miles: it must, therefore, have been originally introduced into Loch Maben by means of the spawn'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Vendace of Loch Maben, 1862: A Rare and Mysterious Freshwater Fish This photograph showcases the enigmatic Vendace fish, native to the lochs surrounding Loch Maben in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. The Vendace, as far as we know, is a unique species found only in these waters. Its origins are shrouded in history, with many believing it was introduced to the lochs by Mary Queen of Scots from European fish preserves. The Vendace bears a striking resemblance to the herring, with a similar elongated body and slender shape. However, unlike its marine counterpart, the Vendace is a freshwater fish. Some locals refer to it as a 'freshwater herring.' The Vendace's life cycle is intriguing. It spawns around November, gathering in large shoals and rising to the surface of the water, creating popping noises as they do. These behaviors mimic those of common herring. The Vendace is an incredibly tender and productive fish, but it is also shy and elusive, requiring careful netting to catch. Once removed from the water, its demise is inevitable, even if immediately returned. The Vendace is a rare and fascinating find for naturalists, who marvel at its tenderness and the fact that it could not survive transportation even short distances. This photograph is a testament to the beauty and uniqueness of this mysterious fish, which continues to captivate the imagination and curiosity of those who encounter it in the waters of Loch Maben.
