EDITORS COMMENTS
St John's Gate, captured in this stunning 1890s photograph by Bedford Lemere and Co., offers a glimpse into the rich history of Clerkenwell, Islington, and Greater London. This medieval gatehouse, built in 1504, served as the south gateway to the Priory of Clerkenwell Priory, the headquarters of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. Prior Thomas Docwra oversaw its construction, and the intricate stonework and architectural details reflect the grandeur and importance of the priory during that time. The north side of St John's Gate, as depicted in this image, showcases the gate's impressive size and the ornate decorations adorning its arches. The gatehouse was not only a symbol of power and protection but also a testament to the architectural prowess of the era. As you delve deeper into the image, you can spot various elements that add to the scene's charm. The cobblestone street, lined with trees and shrubs, leads up to the gate, while the wrought-iron fence and the arched entrance create an inviting yet imposing atmosphere. The photograph also captures the essence of the bustling city life of the late 19th century, with people and carriages moving about in the background. This photograph by Bedford Lemere and Co. is an invaluable record of St John's Gate and the history it holds. It offers a unique perspective into the past, allowing us to appreciate the architectural beauty and historical significance of this remarkable structure.
