EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "ÒÇÄþö╗µ£¼ÞÖ½µÆ░ÒÇÅÒÇîÞØ©þëøÒÇì Land Snail" takes us on a journey through the mesmerizing world of crawling creatures. The artwork, created during the Edo period in Japan between 1615 and 1868, is part of an exquisite woodblock printed book called "『画本虫撰』「蝸牛」「轡虫」". The image showcases a beautifully illustrated land snail, known as katatsumuri in Japanese. Its intricate details are brought to life with vibrant ink and color on delicate paper. Created by the renowned artist Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806), this piece is one of fifteen designs that feature various insects and garden creatures. Published by Tsutaya Jūzaburō, this picture book not only presents stunning visuals but also includes selected poems introduced with a preface written by poet and scholar Yadoya Meshimori Rokujuen (1753–1830). It holds great significance as it was produced during the influential Go Gawa poetry group era. Measuring approximately 10 1/2 x 7 7/32 inches (267 x 184 cm), this print from Artokoloro's Liszt Collection transports viewers back in time to appreciate the art
