Dated between 1818 and 1825, this print showcases Monnosuke's masterful portrayal of the tragic character. The actor is depicted seated on the floor, clad in a distinctive star-burst kimono, and intently playing the shamisen. Yaoya Oshichi is a well-known figure in Japanese folklore, the story of whom is deeply rooted in the history of Japanese theater. Oshichi was the daughter of a greengrocer in Kyoto during the late Edo period. She was in love with a young samurai named Sagikara Suetsuna, but due to their social differences, their relationship was forbidden.
