EDITORS COMMENTS
This oval print showcases the distinguished visage of August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue, a renowned German dramatist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born on February 16, 1761, in Memel, Prussia, Kotzebue was a prolific playwright whose works significantly influenced the development of German literature. The image, captured by the skilled hand of Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, portrays Kotzebue in a formal attire typical of the era. He dons a high collar, adorned with intricately designed buttons, which frames his face and adds an air of sophistication. His short, well-groomed hair is parted neatly to the side, revealing a thoughtful expression on his face. Kotzebue's career spanned over five decades, during which he wrote more than 100 plays, many of which were translated into various European languages and performed in theaters across Europe. His plays often dealt with contemporary social issues, and his ability to capture the zeitgeist of his time made him a popular and influential figure in German literature. Despite his literary success, Kotzebue's life was not without controversy. In 1819, he was assassinated by a student who was offended by one of his plays. The tragic event brought an end to Kotzebue's illustrious career and marked a dark chapter in German literary history. This evocative portrait of August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue, captured by Tischbein, offers a glimpse into the life of a man whose contributions to German literature continue to be celebrated and studied to this day.
