Daughter of the 3rd Earl of Shrewsbury, Alathea was married to Thomas Howard, the second earl of Arundel and Surrey, in 1626. The couple's marriage was a significant political alliance, as the Howards and Talbots were two of the most powerful families in England at the time. The portrait was created by the renowned English engraver and etcher, Wenceslaus Hollar. Hollar, who was born in Prague but spent most of his career in England, was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the subtle nuances of his subjects' expressions. In this portrait, Hollar has expertly rendered Alathea's delicate features, her expressive eyes, and the intricate details of her elaborate attire. Alathea's elegant gown, adorned with lace and pearls, is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the English aristocracy during this period.
