EDITORS COMMENTS
Mikhail Bakunin, a pivotal figure in the history of revolutionary thought and the founder of anarchism as an international political ideology, is depicted in this portrait. Born in 1814 in the Russian Empire, Bakunin's radical political beliefs emerged during his time studying at the University of Czernowitz in the Austrian Empire. He became involved in various revolutionary movements, including the Polish uprising of 1831, for which he was exiled to Siberia. Bakunin's anarchist ideas were influenced by the works of philosophers such as Pierre-Joseph Proudhon and Friedrich Nietzsche, as well as his experiences in the Carbonari and the International Workingmen's Association. Anarchism, as espoused by Bakunin, rejected the need for a centralized state or government and advocated for a society based on voluntary cooperation and mutual aid. Despite his significant contributions to revolutionary thought, Bakunin's ideas were often at odds with those of more prominent figures such as Karl Marx. The two men engaged in a heated debate at the International Workingmen's Association, with Marx ultimately emerging as the dominant figure. Bakunin continued to spread his ideas, however, and his influence can be seen in various anarchist movements throughout history. Bakunin's life was marked by exile, imprisonment, and numerous attempts to overthrow the Russian government. He died in 1876, but his ideas continue to inspire and influence political thought and activism to this day. This portrait, taken in the late 19th century, captures the intensity and passion of a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of a more just and equitable society.
