EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Beryl Markham (1902-1986), the British-born Kenyan author, aviator, adventurer, and racehorse trainer, is seen with a beaming smile on her face, moments after completing her historic solo flight from Abingdon, England, to Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada. Dressed in her flying gear and holding a map in one hand and a pair of binoculars in the other, Markham embodies the spirit of adventure and determination that defined her extraordinary life. Born in 1902 in England, Markham moved to Kenya as a young girl and grew up among the wild animals and rugged terrain of the African savannah. She became an accomplished horse trainer and jockey, but her true passion was aviation. In 1936, at the age of 34, Markham made history as the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean from east to west, a feat she accomplished in just over 17 hours. Markham's daring exploits in the skies and on the ground were chronicled in her memoirs, including "West with the Night," which was published in 1942 and became a literary sensation. Her writing captured the essence of her adventurous spirit and her deep connection to the natural world. Markham continued to break boundaries throughout her life, becoming a successful racehorse trainer and a trailblazer for women in aviation. This photograph, taken in 1936, captures Markham at the height of her fame and accomplishment, a testament to her indomitable spirit and her unwavering commitment to living life on her own terms.
