EDITORS COMMENTS
is a poignant and evocative war drawing by Lieutenant Will H Dyson, an Australian Imperial Force soldier turned official war artist. Dyson, who joined the Army in 1915 and was wounded twice, captured the raw and unfiltered reality of the Western Front through his sketches. In 1915, he was appointed as an official war artist at the front lines, and his works were later exhibited in London and published in the book "Australia at War" in November 1918. This particular drawing, created in December 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, depicts a group of weary Australian soldiers huddled around a brazier, their hands reaching out to warm themselves by the fire. The scene is one of camaraderie and survival, a brief respite from the harsh and unforgiving conditions of the battlefield. The soldiers' expressions convey a mix of exhaustion, relief, and determination, as they look up from the fire to gaze into the distance, likely anticipating the next challenge they will face. The drawing is a testament to the resilience and fortitude of the soldiers during wartime, and the small comforts that could bring a sense of warmth and connection amidst the chaos and hardship. Dyson's work offers a unique and powerful perspective into the experiences of the Australian soldiers during World War I, and continues to be an important part of military and topographical history.
