EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving is an exquisite representation of two primate species, the endangered chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) and the moustached guenon monkey (Cercopithecus cephus), from Frederic Cuvier's "Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals," published in Paris, France, in 1816. The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and published by F.G. Levrault. The chimpanzee, a common name for the Pan troglodytes species, is one of our closest living relatives, sharing about 98.7% of our DNA. With their distinctive human-like features, including opposable thumbs, complex social structures, and advanced problem-solving skills, they are a fascinating subject of study for scientists and conservationists. Sadly, they are currently listed as endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, and disease. The moustached guenon monkey, also known as the Cercopithecus cephus, is a Old World monkey species native to Central and West Africa. They are named for the distinctive white mustache-like markings on their faces. These monkeys are agile climbers and live in groups led by a dominant male. They feed on a varied diet of leaves, fruits, and flowers. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the natural history of these two primate species but also highlights the artistic skill and attention to detail of the time. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the world's diverse wildlife and their habitats for future generations to enjoy.
