Plate 14 of Margaret Bushby Lascelles Cockburn's "Neilgherry Birds and Miscellaneous" (1858) features a stunning watercolor illustration of the Purple Sunbird, Cinnyris asiaticus (Plate 14, Figure 1), in the act of feeding on the nectar of a honeysuckle flower. The sunbird, a small, slender bird belonging to the family Nectariniidae and the order Passeriformes, is depicted with its curved, decurved bill, a distinctive feature of this avian species. The bird's cream-colored belly and vibrant purple plumage contrast beautifully with the delicate, white petals of the honeysuckle flower, a member of the Caprifoliaceae family, which is also known as Lonicera. The sunbird is shown perched on the flower, its long, pointed wings folded behind it, and its tail feathers spread out. The sunbird's diet consists mainly of nectar, which it extracts from flowers using its long, curved bill.
