Commissioned by The Sketch in January 1941, Wright went on to produce an impressive series of 169 illustrations and one cover for the fortnightly publication. The illustrations, titled "David Wright's Lovelies," became an enormous success during the World War II period, establishing Wright as the most prominent pin-up artist of the time. The Lovelies, as they came to be known, depicted glamorous ladies wearing sheer clothing or in various states of undress. These captivating images were inspired by Wright's wife, Esme, and proved to be a huge hit with the public. Wright's work for The Sketch was produced during his time with the Royal Artillery, between 1912 and 1967. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the life of this talented artist during a pivotal moment in his career. The Lovelies series not only provided a welcome distraction for the public during the war but also cemented Wright's place in the annals of art history.
