EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken in 1947, we see Mr. W.F. Grimes, the esteemed Keeper of the London Museum (now known as the Museum of London), diligently working alongside a dedicated volunteer, Miss Adrienne Farrell, in the ruins of the Cripplegate area in the heart of the City of London. The scene is set against the backdrop of the devastation wrought by the relentless bombing raids that had ravaged the city during World War II. The Roman and Medieval Excavation Council, under the expert direction of Mr. Grimes, had embarked on a systematic exploration of this area, which lay in ruins before rebuilding efforts could commence. The council's mission was to uncover the ancient history hidden beneath the rubble, preserving the rich heritage of the city for future generations. As they work side by side in the trench at Monkwell Street, Mr. Grimes and Miss Farrell are making significant strides in their quest for knowledge. Their determined efforts eventually led to the unearthing of substantial Roman fort remains, providing invaluable insights into the city's past. This poignant image captures the spirit of resilience and dedication that defined the post-war archaeological community in London. Amid the ruins of a once-great city, these intrepid archaeologists, led by the visionary Mr. Grimes, were committed to uncovering the hidden stories of the past, ensuring that the legacy of the ancient Roman fort would not be lost to the sands of time.
