EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the dignified and introsive gaze of General James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States, taken around January 6, 1882. Garfield, a prominent figure during the American Civil War, served as a Major General in the Union Army before being elected to the presidency in 1880. Tragically, his tenure was short-lived as he was assassinated only six and a half months into his term. Born on November 19, 1831, in Moreland Hills, Ohio, Garfield was known for his strong work ethic and dedication to public service. Prior to his military and political careers, he taught school and worked as a surveyor. Garfield's presidency was marked by his commitment to civil service reform and his efforts to improve the lives of common people. Despite his untimely death, Garfield's legacy continues to be celebrated in American history. This photograph, taken during his later years, offers a glimpse into the character and presence of a man who dedicated his life to serving his country. The image, with its rich detail and striking composition, invites us to reflect on the complexities of a man who led the nation during a pivotal moment in its history.
