Cartier's political career began in earnest when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada in 1848. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a leading figure in the Reform Movement, which sought greater autonomy for the Canadian colonies. In 1857, Cartier was appointed to the Executive Council of the Province of Canada, and in 1861, he became a member of the Legislative Council. Cartier's greatest achievement came during the Confederation debates in the late 1860s. Alongside Sir John A. Macdonald, Cartier was instrumental in crafting the British North America Act, which established the Dominion of Canada in 1867. Cartier's persuasive oratory skills and diplomatic abilities were essential in securing the support of Quebec's French-speaking population for Confederation, which was a critical factor in the success of the project. After Confederation, Cartier continued to serve as a prominent figure in Canadian politics. He was appointed as the Secretary of State for the Province of Canada in 1867 and later served as the Postmaster General and the Minister of Militia and Defence.
