EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two wading birds, the Hamerkop, or Hammerhead Stork (Scopus umbretta), and the Asian Openbill Stork (Anastomus oscitans), from Jean Gabriel Pretre's illustrations for Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology. Published in Paris, France between 1816 and 1830, this work was a significant contribution to the scientific community during the age of discovery and exploration. The Hamerkop, native to sub-Saharan Africa, is easily identified by its distinctive hammer-shaped head, which is used to hammer open the shells of its prey. The Asian Openbill Stork, on the other hand, is native to Asia and is characterized by its large, open bill, which it uses to probe for food in the mud. The illustration, painted by Jean Gabriel Pretre, was engraved by Miss Coignet and directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Pretre was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The engraving was published by F.G. Levrault. This beautiful work of art showcases the intricate detail and skill of the artists and engravers of the time, providing a glimpse into the natural world of the past. The Hamerkop and Asian Openbill Stork are just two examples of the many species documented during this era of scientific discovery and exploration, contributing to our understanding and appreciation of the natural world.
