EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image from ancient Greek mythology, Herakles (also known as Hercules) is depicted in a moment of uncontrollable rage. The legendary hero, renowned for his strength and courage, is shown angrily casting Lichas into the sea. The reason for Herakles' fury lies in the shirt that Lichas unwittingly brings to him. This garment was poisoned by the vengeful centaur Nessus, who had been tasked with carrying Herakles' wife, Deianira, across a river. Nessus attempted to rape Deianira during the journey, but Herakles saved her and killed Nessus instead. In his dying moments, Nessus vowed to take revenge on Herakles, and he sent the poisoned shirt to his wife as a parting gift. Deianira, believing it would keep Herakles faithful to her, drenched the shirt in the venom and gave it to him as a token of love. However, when Herakles wore the shirt, the poison seeped into his skin, causing him immense pain and suffering. Unaware of the cause, Herakles became enraged when Lichas brought him the shirt, believing him to be the instigator of his torment. In a fit of anger, Herakles flung Lichas into the sea. The sea god Tethys, moved by Lichas' innocent plight, transformed him into a rock to protect him from the wrath of Herakles. This powerful scene encapsulates the complexities of Greek mythology, with themes of love, betrayal, and revenge. The image also highlights the heroic and tragic aspects of Herakles' life, as well as the capricious nature of the gods. The classical artistry and historical significance of this print make it a fascinating addition to any collection, offering a glimpse into the rich and enduring stories of ancient Greece.
