EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from 1916, journalists eagerly explore the impressive hull of HMS Courageous during a visit to the shipyard where she was under construction. The British battlecruiser, launched later that year, would go on to serve with distinction during the latter part of the First World War. However, the courageous vessel's history would take an unexpected turn in the late 1920s when she was converted into an aircraft carrier, pioneering the use of aviation at sea for the Royal Navy. Despite her innovative role in naval history, HMS Courageous met an untimely end on September 5, 1939, when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat during the early days of World War II. The tragic loss of this iconic ship marked a significant blow to the British naval forces. As the journalists in this photograph document the construction progress of the battlecruiser, they could hardly have imagined the transformative role she would play in the evolving landscape of naval warfare. This image captures a moment in time, where the world was on the brink of change, and the future of air power at sea was about to be written.
