EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken at Peterboro Airport in 1933, captures a historic moment in the lives of three pioneering explorers: Sir Hubert Wilkins from Australia, Lincoln Ellsworth from the United States, and Bernt Balchen from Norway. The trio stands before a plane, their faces etched with determination and excitement, as they prepared for their next great adventure. Born in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1888, Sir Hubert Wilkins was a renowned Australian explorer, ethnologist, and photographer. He was the first person to fly over the North and South Poles, and the first to make a solo flight from England to Australia. Wilkins was also a pioneer in underwater exploration, having made the first underwater breathing experiments using a diving bell. Lincoln Ellsworth, an American businessman and polar explorer, is best known for his attempts to fly over the South Pole in 1935, which he achieved with his partner, Herbert Hollick-Kenyon. Ellsworth was also an accomplished photographer and filmmaker, documenting his expeditions and sharing the wonders of the polar regions with the world. Bernt Balchen, a Norwegian aviator and polar explorer, was a key figure in the Roald Amundsen and Richard E. Byrd expeditions to the Antarctic. Balchen was the first person to fly over the South Pole, and he also played a crucial role in the rescue of Byrd's team during their 1933-35 Antarctic expedition. The photograph of these three explorers, taken at Peterboro Airport in 1933, stands as a testament to their spirit of adventure and their groundbreaking achievements in exploration. The image captures a moment in time when these pioneers, from different corners of the world, came together to push the boundaries of human knowledge and understanding of our planet.
