EDITORS COMMENTS
This image from the 1880s, brought to us by the renowned Victorian illustrator Randolph Caldecott, presents two delightful scenes from a beloved children's game or story, "The Queen of the Pirate Isle." In the first illustration, we find Polly and her cousin Hickory Hunt, bundled up against the elements as they cling to each other on the back of a make-believe horse, galloping through a stormy sea towards a deserted island. Their faces are filled with excitement and adventure, as they imagine themselves rescuing the queen of the pirate isle and embarking on a daring pirate adventure. In the second illustration, the children have reached their imagined desert island and have sought refuge in a cozy little tent, transformed into a closet, to escape the storm. Polly, Kate, and Bret Harte (not the famous writer) huddle together, their faces filled with a sense of safety and contentment, as they share stories and dreams within the confines of their makeshift shelter. The green leaves of the island's foliage can be seen peeking through the cracks in the closet door, hinting at the wonders that await them once the storm has passed. These delightful illustrations, created by Caldecott in 1886, evoke the spirit of childhood imagination and adventure, transporting us to a time when the world was filled with wonder and possibility.
