EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the majestic presence of the Japanese warship Hiei, a Kongo-class battlecruiser of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) during the early 20th century. Commissioned in 1914, Hiei was the second of four Kongo-class battlecruisers designed by renowned British naval architect, George Thurston. The battlecruiser's sleek design, showcased in this image taken circa 1915, reflects the balance between speed and firepower that defined the battlecruiser class. Battlecruisers, such as Hiei, were a unique class of warships that carried less armor than battleships to allow for increased speed. Despite this, they were often of a similar size and bore similar weaponry, making them formidable adversaries on the high seas. The Hiei was armed with a main battery of twelve 35.6 cm (14 inches) guns and a secondary battery of twelve 15.5 cm (6.1 inches) guns. The design of the Hiei and her sister ships was a testament to the international exchange of naval knowledge during the early 20th century. British expertise, as represented by Thurston's design, played a significant role in shaping the Japanese Navy's capabilities during World War I and World War II. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of naval warfare and international cooperation, as well as the enduring legacy of the Kongo-class battlecruisers.
