This engraving depicts Joaquim Lluch i Garriga (1816-1882), a renowned Catholic priest, bishop, and cardinal from Spain. The image, created by the skilled hand of Spanish engraver A. Carter, was published in the prestigious Spanish illustrated magazine La Ilustracion Espanola y Americana in 1877. Born in the small village of Vilanova de Meià, in the province of Lleida, Lluch i Garriga dedicated his life to the Catholic Church. He began his ecclesiastical career as a priest and later rose through the ranks to become a bishop in 1863, serving the diocese of Tarragona. In 1875, he was appointed as the Archbishop of Valencia, a position he held until his death in 1882. In 1879, Lluch i Garriga was elevated to the rank of cardinal by Pope Leo XIII, making him one of the most prominent figures in the Catholic Church during the late 19th century. His dedication to his faith and his service to the Spanish people earned him a reputation as a respected and beloved religious leader.
