EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, King Ferdinand I of Bulgaria (1861-1948) and his second wife, Princess Eleonore Caroline Gasparine Louise Reuss of Kostritz (1860-1917), also known as Tsaritsa Eleonora, pose sternly for the camera. The King, dressed in a formal military uniform with numerous medals and decorations adorning his chest, holds a fur-trimmed scepter in one hand and an armored mace in the other. His expression is severe and unapproachable, reflecting the seriousness of his royal duties. Beside him, Queen Eleonore, dressed in an elegant fur coat and matching hat, gazes off into the distance with a more serene expression. Her fur-trimmed collar and cuffs contrast sharply with the King's militaristic attire, adding a touch of femininity to the image. The photograph, taken circa 1910, captures the regal couple at the height of their power and prestige. King Ferdinand I, who ruled Bulgaria from 1908 until his abdication in 1918, was a highly respected and beloved monarch. His second marriage to Princess Eleonore, which took place in 1893, was a love match that produced three children. However, their union was not without controversy, as Eleonore was a German princess and Bulgaria was a newly independent nation striving to establish its own identity. Despite the challenges they faced, the King and Queen remained devoted to each other and to their country. This photograph serves as a testament to their enduring love and commitment, as well as to the rich history and traditions of the Bulgarian monarchy.
