EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of American actress Laurette Taylor, born Loretta Helen Clooney, during her successful run in the popular London show, Peg O' My Heart, in 1915. Taylor, who was married to the play's writer J Hartley Manners, is seen here with one of the show's beloved canine stars, Michael, a charming terrier. Peg O' My Heart was one of the most popular shows during the First World War, providing much-needed entertainment to London audiences amidst the turmoil of the Great War. The show, which told the story of a young woman's search for love and happiness, was a huge success, and Taylor's performance as the leading lady was widely acclaimed. Michael, the adorable terrier co-star, became a sensation in his own right. However, during the show's run, Michael went missing for a brief period, causing quite a stir amongst the cast and crew. The Tatler, a popular society magazine of the time, reported on the canine's safe return, much to the relief of the production team and the show's devoted fans. This photograph provides a rare glimpse into the world of early 20th-century theatre and the unique bond between actress and canine co-star. Taylor's radiant smile and Michael's playful expression add to the charm of this enduring image, making it a fascinating piece of entertainment history.
