EDITORS COMMENTS
"Madame De Balzac, née Mme Hanska, was a Polish banker's widow who made headlines in the late 19th century for her scandalous affair with the renowned French novelist, Honore de Balzac. The two met in Paris in the 1840s, where Madame Hanska, a wealthy and elegant woman, was known for her beauty and her love for the arts. Balzac, already a successful author, was immediately captivated by her and began a passionate correspondence with her. Their affair lasted for over a decade, during which Balzac dedicated several of his works to her and she became a muse for many of his characters. However, it was not until after the death of her husband in 1858 that the two finally decided to marry. The union caused a scandal in high society, as Madame Hanska was much older than Balzac and her wealth was seen as a potential threat to his artistic independence. Despite the criticism, the couple remained devoted to each other until Balzac's death in 1857. This photograph, taken circa 1860, captures Madame De Balzac in her later years, with her regal bearing and refined elegance. Her story is a testament to the power of love and the enduring allure of the enigmatic Balzac." This image is a historical record and is not intended for commercial use.
