Mary Winchester
Mary Winchester, pictured after her release from captivity, pictured with Scubedar, an officer who took care of her following her release. Mary (1865 - 1955), was captured in 1871 and held hostage by the Mizo people of Mizoram, north-eastern India (then called the Lushai Hills). Her father was killed during the raid in which she was captured, in January 1871. Generally well-cared for while in captivity, she was released in January 1872 and returned to her grandparents in Scotland. Date: 1872

EDITORS COMMENTS
Mary Winchester (1865-1955), a Scottish girl of just six years old, is seen here in a heartwarming moment of reunion with Scubedar, an officer who took care of her following her release from captivity in 1872. Mary was taken hostage by the Mizo people of Mizoram, north-eastern India, then known as the Lushai Hills, during a raid in January 1871. Tragically, her father was killed during the attack. Despite the harrowing circumstances, Mary was generally well-treated while in captivity. She was adopted into a local family and lived among the Mizo people for over a year. However, her longing for home and her grandparents never waned. The British government, concerned about the safety of European settlers in the region, launched a rescue mission to free Mary and other captives. She was eventually released in January 1872 and returned to Scotland, where she was reunited with her loved ones. This poignant photograph captures a moment of relief and gratitude as Mary is embraced by Scubedar, who had been instrumental in her safe return. The image serves as a poignant reminder of Mary's harrowing experiences and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
