This striking oil painting depicts the Right Reverend Dr. Charles T.P. Grierson, who served as the Bishop of Down and Dromore from 1928 until his retirement in 1933. The portrait was painted by Sir John Lavery, a renowned Irish artist known for his portraits and landscapes. Born on March 2, 1857, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Charles T.P. Grierson was educated at Trinity College in Dublin and ordained as a priest in the Church of Ireland in 1882. He held various ecclesiastical positions before being appointed as the Bishop of Down and Dromore in 1928. Grierson was a respected leader in the Church of Ireland during a time of significant social and political change in Northern Ireland. He was known for his pastoral care and commitment to social justice, and he played an active role in addressing the needs of the poor and marginalized in his diocese. Sir John Lavery, the artist who painted this portrait, was born in Scotland but spent much of his career in Ireland.
