EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Orycteropus afer 1. Oritteropo del Capo di Buona Speranza" and "Priodontes maximus 2. Priodonte gigante" (Aardvark and Giant Armadillo), is an exquisite example of 19th-century natural science illustration. Created in Florence, Italy, in 1837, this illustration was published by Batelli e Figli and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest French illustrators of his time, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to capture the natural world with exceptional accuracy. The image features two fascinating mammals from the order Cingulata: the Aardvark (Orycteropus afer) and the Giant Armadillo (Priodontes maximus). The Aardvark, also known as the Cape Anteater or Orycteropus, is a nocturnal, burrowing animal native to Africa. With its elongated snout and powerful claws, it is well-adapted to its diet of ants and termites. The Giant Armadillo, on the other hand, is the largest living armadillo species, found primarily in South America. This armadillo is also an expert burrower and feeds mainly on ants, termites, and worms. This beautiful engraving was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and engraved by Corsi. The intricate stipple technique used in the illustration showcases the artists' mastery of their craft, resulting in a visually captivating and highly detailed representation of these unique creatures. The hand-coloring further enhances the image, adding depth and vibrancy to the animals' fur and skin textures. This enchanting illustration is a testament to the rich history of natural science exploration and the remarkable artistic talent that brought the wonders of the natural world to life during the 19th century.
