EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming chromolithograph depicts a proud and elegant presentation of American Wyandotte chickens, with a cock and hen proudly displayed in the center. The image, created by Vincent Brooks Day & Son after an original illustration by J.W. Ludlow, was published in Lewis Wright's "The Illustrated Book of Poultry" in 1890. Surrounding the central chickens are seven young girls, dressed in satin dresses, bonnets adorned with ringlets, and ballet shoes. The girls, named Emily, Blanche, Charlotte, Rose, Caroline, Catherine, and Anne, are depicted in various poses, some holding baskets filled with flowers or ribbons, while others gaze at the chickens with admiration. The scene is set in a Victorian aristocratic setting, with the girls' noble lineage represented by the presence of the Duke of Somerset and his sons, Henry and Charles, who are shown in the background. The girls' dresses are adorned with frills and ribbons, adding to the overall sense of elegance and refinement. The image is reminiscent of a portrait, with the chickens taking the place of traditional portrait subjects. The intricate steel engraving technique used in the print adds to the detail and texture, making for a stunning and timeless depiction of American Wyandotte chickens and the young girls who admire them.
