In this evocative image from 1516, the intrepid explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa (1475-1519) sets out on his historic journey to explore the Pacific Ocean. Balboa, dressed in armor and wearing a helmet, stands confidently on the sandy beach, gazing out at the vast expanse of water before him.
