EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, published in Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Animals in Zurich in 1827, features two of the world's most endangered primates: the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus, with the subspecies depicted being Pithecus satyrus) and the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes, subspecies Troglodites niger). Both species are depicted in their natural habitats, showcasing their striking physical differences and intriguing similarities. The Bornean orangutan, native to the rainforests of Borneo, is the smallest of the three orangutan subspecies. With their reddish-brown fur, long arms, and expressive faces, they are considered the oldest living great apes, sharing over 97% of our DNA. However, their population has been decimated due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and poaching, leaving only an estimated 54,000 individuals in the wild. The chimpanzee, native to the forests and savannas of Central and West Africa, is our closest living relative, sharing around 98.7% of our DNA. In this lithograph, the chimpanzee's black fur, long arms, and distinct facial features are on full display. Unfortunately, they too face numerous threats, including habitat loss, poaching, and disease, leading to a population decline of approximately 65% over the past 20 years, leaving only around 300,000 individuals in the wild. This beautiful artwork serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect these endangered primates and their habitats. By raising awareness and supporting organizations dedicated to their preservation, we can help ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to marvel at these remarkable creatures in their natural habitats.
